Oct. 30 (Bloomberg) — Brazil, the record five-time
champion, will host the 2014 World Cup as soccer’s biggest
tournament returns to South America for the first time since
1978.
Brazil, which last claimed the world title in 2002, was
confirmed today as the venue at a meeting of governing body
FIFA’s executive body in Zurich. It was the only candidate after
Colombia withdrew its bid in April.
Brazil hasn’t staged the tournament since 1950, when it
lost to Uruguay in the final. It first claimed the title eight
years later, and retained it in 1962, before further victories
in 1970, 1994 and again five years ago.
